I was amazed that even with 50 episodes, I never felt like it was dragging along. I think the story would be much better if they didn't bother with the subplot of those two characters, but oh well. I don't think it has any problems to rival Gundam Seed or Zeta Gundam in popularity, since Seed is old and Zeta is even older.
